Brandywine Eases Past New Kensington 69-24

MEDIA, Pa. – Penn State Brandywine outscored Penn State New Kensington 60-15 over the final three quarters and rolled to its first Penn State University Athletic Conference women's basketball victory of the year, besting New Kensington 69-24 on Friday night.

Brandywine started slow, trailing 9-7 through nine minutes of play, but Amanda Floyd (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) sank two free throws to tie the score after one quarter and Brandywine took over in the second.

The Lions used a 12-0 run spanning nearly the entire second quarter to build a 23-11 lead and brought a 27-12 edge into the half. Sierra Diawara (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) and Ally Velez (Gloucester, N.J./Gloucester City) fueled the second-quarter run by combining for nine-straight points.

Brandywine continued to roll in the third as the hosts opened the second half with a 17-2 surge to swell the margin to 44-14 and eased to their first conference victory of the season.

Velez notched 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting and added eight rebounds and five steals, while Anaiyah Allen (Lutz, Fla./Steinbrenner) collected a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double. Floyd was the third Lion in double-figure with 10 points. She added seven rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Brandywine dominated on the boards, outrebounding New Kensington 67-37. Fourty-one of the Lions' rebounds came on the offensive end. Amelia Brooks (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) led the rebounding effort with 12 boards, while Diawara grabbed eight and scored eight points.

The Lions limited New Kensington to 24 percent shooting and forced 37 turnovers, scoring 37 points off New Kensington's miscues.

Brandywine (4-1, 1-1 PSUAC) is back at home Saturday for another PSUAC game when the Lions host Penn State Shenango at 12:00 PM.
