Shenango Rallies Past Brandywine

MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine built an 18-point, first-half lead, but Penn State Shenango outscored the Lions 38-23 during the second half to claim a 57-54 Penn State University Athletic Conference women's basketball victory on Saturday afternoon.

Brandywine led 10-8 after one quarter and maintained its two-point lead until the 7:57 mark of the second period when Erin Michael (Brookhaven, Pa./Sun Valley) sank a layup, jumpstarting a 13-0 Brandywine surge. Amanda Floyd (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) fueled the run by knocking down three-pointers on three consecutive possessions, while Anaiyah Allen (Lutz, Fla./Steinbrenner) capped the rally with a basket with 6:05 to go in the half.

The Lions continued to pull away as Allen drained two layups and Sierra Diawara (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) made a free throw to give Brandywine its largest lead of the afternoon at 31-13; however, Shenango scored the final six points of the half during the final 1:23 to get within 12 points at the break.

Shenango continued its comeback bid in the third behind the three-point shooting of Aneziah Fryer. She buried three triples during the period and the visitors pulled within one at 41-40 after 30 minutes.

Fryer started the fourth quarter with another three and Shenango opened up a 47-41 lead following a quick 7-0 spurt to begin the period.

Shenango's lead reached nine points before a 9-2 run capped by a triple and layup from Allen brought Brandywine back within two with 3:01 to play.

The visitors netted the next four points to extend the margin to six, but Allen drained a three-pointer that sliced the deficit in half with 1:13 remaining.

After a steal by Floyd, Brandywine had five opportunities to get closer or tie the score after grabbing four offensive rebounds during the same possession, but each shot was off the mark and Shenango ran out the clock.

Floyd knocked down four three-pointers and joined Allen with 16 points to lead the Lions in scoring. Ally Velez (Gloucester, N.J./Gloucester City) produced nine rebounds and seven assists, while Floyd dished out six assists.

Brandywine, which outrebounded Shenango 56-48, was limited to 26 percent shooting. Six players from Brandywine grabbed at least seven boards.

Brandywine (4-2, 1-2 PSUAC) has an eight-day break before returning to action at home against Immaculata on Nov. 29 at 7:00 pm.
