Brandywine Holds Off York 69-68

YORK, Pa. – Two free throws from Amanda Floyd (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) with 10.5 seconds to play were the difference as the Penn State Brandywine women's basketball team earned its first victory at Penn State York since February 2019 by a 69-68 count on Friday night.

Brandywine, which closed the regular season with eight wins over its final nine games, saw its 21-point, first-quarter lead evaporate as York took its first and only lead of the contest with 15 seconds to play following a basket from Jayla Brown. After a timeout, Floyd, the top PSUAC free throw shooter at 87 percent, was fouled and knocked down a pair of free throws to help the Lions retake the lead.

Brown misfired on a jumper just before the final horn and Anaiyah Allen (Lutz, Fla./Steinbrenner) grabbed the rebound as time expired.

Floyd topped the Lions with 23 points, while Athena Brombacher (Vacaville, Calif./Will C. Wood) produced 17 points. Kiara Koger (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) notched 11 points and 10 boards and Kaitlyn Johnson (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby) tallied 10 points.

Johnson netted all 10 of her points during the first quarter, including a pair of three-pointers, and Brandywine closed the stanza with an 18-3 surge to claim a 30-9 lead.

York battled back in the second period, trimming Brandywine's 21-point edge to seven at halftime behind 10 points from Brown.

Brandywine held York off the scoreboard for nearly seven minutes to begin the second half and pushed its lead back to 15 points. Brombacher netted the first five points of the period and Floyd added a triple at the 4:12 mark to make the score 50-35.

The hosts scored 10 of the final 15 points of the third quarter and trailed by eight with under four minutes to play in regulation, but put together a 10-2 run over the next three minutes, tying the score at 66-all as Brooke Shutter converted a three-point play to cap the run.

Koger sank 1-of-2 free throws to put Brandywine back on top before Brown's basket gave York the lead for the first time.

Brandywine forced 26 York turnovers, while committing just eight miscues. The Lions shot 31 percent from the field, but connected on 20 free throws, compared to just 10 for York.

The teams will meet again Monday night in the PSUAC Tournament quarterfinals as third-seeded Brandywine (15-10, 13-6 PSUAC) returns to second-seeded York for a 6:00 PM game.
