St. Mary’s Downs Brandywine 3-0

MEDIA, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine volleyball team was defeated in straight sets (25-17, 25-18, 25-21) by St. Mary's College of Maryland on Wednesday night.

Brandywine led the first set 9-8 following a kill from Jordan Thompson (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley), but the Seahawks ripped off 13 of the next 15 points to take a 21-11 lead and went on to claim the opening frame 25-17.

St. Mary's used another run, this time a 10-2 spurt, after Brandywine had tied the score at 10-10 to take command of set No. 2. The Lions closed within five following back-to-back Seahawk errors, but SMCM tallied consecutive kills to end the set and grab a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Seahawks netted the first five points of the final frame, but Brandywine rallied opening up a lead as large as four points at 15-11 after a pair of kills from Laura de Jesus (Santo Domingo, D.R./New Horizons) and an error. However, St. Mary's countered with seven of the next 10 points to regain the lead, which it would not relinquish.

Madison Swenson (Chadds Ford, Pa./Kennett) led all players with 22 assists and 14 digs, while Suzie Alvarenga (Fullerton, Calif./Notre Dame Academy) chipped in 13 digs and four helpers.

Anna Ramirez (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) collected a team best 13 kills and Amanda Floyd (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) added five, while Dana Palmer (New London, Pa./Avon Grove) registered four.

Sydney Stevens (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. DuPont) produced 10 digs and Thompson added a team-best two solo blocks, along with three kills.

Brandywine (5-3, 4-1 PSUAC) looks to bounce back Thursday night at home against Penn State Hazleton at 7:00 pm.
