Brandywine Tops Scranton In Four Sets

MEDIA, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine volleyball team won its fourth consecutive Penn State University Athletic Conference match by edging Penn State Scranton 3-1 (25-7, 19-25, 25-8, 25-12) on Saturday afternoon.

Jordan Thompson (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley), Amanda Floyd (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) and Anna Ramirez (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) all reached double figures in kills as Thompson produced 12 and Floyd and Ramirez each registered 11.

Laura de Jesus (Santo Domingo, D.R./New Horizons) chipped in seven kills and Dana Palmer (New London, Pa./Avon Grove) added five kills and two blocks, while Madison Swenson (Chadds Ford, Pa./Kennett) collected 39 assists and six digs.

Brandywine eased to an opening-set victory as Ramirez and Floyd capped a 10-1 surge with back-to-back kills, making the score 13-3. The Lions later netted the final eight points of the frame, aided by three kills from de Jesus.

Scranton led for nearly the entire set second, pulling away with six of the final eight points to even the match at 1-1.

The Lions quickly rebounded, scoring a 12-3 run to open the third set and went on to win the frame going away, 25-8.

Brandywine opened up a 7-0 edge during set No. 4 and expanded the margin to 12 points on Thompson's fifth of six kills during the period that made the score 22-10. Scranton recorded consecutive points, but Thompson and Ramirez added kills and Ramirez finished off the match with an ace.

Ramirez, Leilu Campbell (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) and Sydney Stevens (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. DuPont) all recorded three aces as Brandywine produced 13 overall. Suzie Alvarenga (Fullerton, Calif./Notre Dame Academy) topped all players with 16 digs.

Brandywine (6-3, 5-1 PSUAC) returns to its home floor Monday night to face Penn State Schuylkill at 7:00 pm.
