Brandywine Claims Two Dig Pink Victories

MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine earned three-set victories over Penn State Schuylkill (25-14, 25-20, 25-15) and Penn State Scranton (25-12, 25-5, 25-7) during the volleyball team's 11th-annual Dig Pink Day supporting breast cancer awareness on Sunday afternoon.

Match One: Penn State Brandywine 3, Penn State Schuylkill 0

Anna Ramirez (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) posted a team-high 12 kills and matched Suzie Alvarenga (Fullerton, Calif./Notre Dame Academy) for the team lead with 14 digs.

Lexie Berry (Brookhaven, Pa./Daegu (South Korea)) added eight kills, while Amanda Floyd (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) and Katie Snyder (Wilmington, Del./Dickinson) both posted seven. Laura Jezyk (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) tallied 32 assists and four aces, while Sydney Stevens (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. DuPont) posted a team-best five aces.

Brandywine ran away with the first set, using four kills each from Berry, Floyd and Ramirez to build a double-digit lead.

Schuylkill kept the second frame close and trailed just 16-15, but three errors and an ace from Alvarenga pushed the Lions' lead to five points. The visitors closed within three, but a kill from Jezyk and ace from Stevens gave Brandywine a 2-0 edge.

Brandywine fell behind 3-1 early during the final set before reeling off nine consecutive points to take command. Ramirez's 12th and final kill of the match handed Brandywine the 3-0 triumph.

Match Two: Penn State Brandywine 3, Penn State Scranton 0

For the second time in as many days, Brandywine defeated Scranton in straight sets.

The Lions used a 7-0 spurt, aided by two aces from Ramirez and kills from Berry and Savannah Bauer (San Jose, Calif./Santa Teresa), to grab a 17-4 lead in the opening set. Bauer set down two more kills, as did Snyder, and Brandywine took the opener 25-12.

Jezyk tallied three aces and Floyd collected four kills during a 15-0 run to open the second set. Brandywine ran away with a 25-5 second frame before again pulling away in the final period. The Lions led 8-6, but scored 17 of the final 18 points to secure the sweep.

Floyd posted 10 kills, while Snyder totaled nine and both Bauer and Ramirez collected eight. Jezyk handed out 31 assists and produced a game-high seven aces.

On the defensive side, Alvarenga topped all players with 15 digs, while Ramirez tallied six.

Brandywine (7-5, 6-2 PSUAC) continues its eight-game homestand Wednesday against Penn State York at 7:00 PM.
