Brandywine Sweeps Hazleton; Clinches Second Seed In PSUAC Tournament

MEDIA, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine volleyball team closed out the regular season by sweeping Penn State Hazleton (25-21, 25-13, 25-8) and in the process, clinched the No. 2 seed from the East Division in next week's Penn State University Athletic Conference Tournament.

Brandywine ran out to a 16-6 lead during the first set, but Hazleton rallied to get within three points on four occasions. After Hazleton narrowed the margin to 20-17, the teams traded points until a service error and a kill from Anna Ramirez (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) set the Lions up with set point. Hazleton recorded the next two points, but an error handed the set to Brandywine by a 25-21 count.

The Lions held a one-point edge midway through the second period before rallying to score the final 10 points of the set. Aided by five service aces from Sydney Stevens (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. DuPont), along with kills from Stevens, Ramirez, Katie Snyder (Wilmington, Del./Dickinson) and Amanda Floyd (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro), Brandywine took a 2-0 lead in the match.

The final set was never close as Brandywine scored five quick points behind three kills from Ramirez and two aces by Floyd to grab an 8-2 advantage. The Lions quickly pulled away, spurred by four Ramirez kills, three from Savannah Bauer (San Jose, Calif./Santa Teresa) and two by Floyd, scoring 16 of the set's final 18 points to claim the frame 25-8.

Ramirez led all players with 14 kills, while Floyd tallied 10 and Bauer added four. Laura Jezyk (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) aided the offense by handing out 29 assists and Stevens collected seven of Brandywine's 13 aces.

Defensively, Suzie Alvarenga (Fullerton, Calif./Notre Dame Academy) produced a match-high 15 digs, giving her 365 for the year, a new Brandywine single-season record. Ramirez added 10 digs, while Stevens and Jezyk each collected seven.

Brandywine (12-9, 9-3 PSUAC) and Hazleton will meet again in the PSUAC Tournament quarterfinals Wednesday night at 7:00 PM.
