Bio

Justin Dunbar-Stevens completed his fifth season as head men's basketball coach at Penn State Brandywine in 2022-23.

The 2022-23 PSUAC Coach of the Year, Dunbar-Stevens guided the Lions to a 19-win season and the No. 1 seed in the PSUAC Tournament after winning the conference's East Division during the regular season. Two players received all-conference and all-American awards, including senior Bryce Barrouk, who became the program's first-ever USCAA National Player of the Year. Barrouk also received the John S. Egli Award as the conference's top scholar-athlete.

Dunbar-Stevens, the 11th head coach in the 50-year history of the program, inherited a Brandywine team that captured its first-ever Penn State University Athletic Conference championship during the 2017-18 season and won 14 games during his first season on the Lions' bench. Brandywine made a return to the postseason, entering the PSUAC Tournament as the No. 3 seed in the East Division. Under Dunbar-Stevens' guidance, freshman Jacob Hunt was named PSUAC Rookie of the Year and First Team All-PSUAC.

During his four seasons at Brandywine, the Lions have won 57 games and made three postseason appearances in the competitive PSUAC East Division, including a trip to the PSUAC Tournament Championship in 2021-22.

From 2016-18, Dunbar-Stevens served as an assistant coach at NCAA Division III Eastern University. During his two seasons on the Eagles’ bench, the team combined to win 31 games, while reaching the conference tournament in both years. In addition to his on-court coaching duties, Dunbar-Stevens was charged with defensive game-planning, scouting opponents, recruiting and team operations.

Dunbar-Stevens started his collegiate coaching career at Bucks County Community College in 2015-16, where he began his tenure as an assistant coach, the lone assistant on the staff, before being elevated to interim head coach midway through the season. He led the Centurions to an 11-win improvement over the prior season and the team’s first postseason appearance in eight years.

A 2012 graduate of Philadelphia University, Dunbar-Stevens earned his bachelor of science degree in graphic design communication. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in business management from Eastern University.

As an undergraduate student at Philadelphia University, Dunbar-Stevens began his coaching career at Central High School in Philadelphia. He spent three seasons as an assistant boys basketball coach, focusing on player development as he saw four of his players accept offers from NCAA institutions to continue their basketball careers.
