Brandywine Tied For Fifth After Opening Round Of Championships

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Following the conclusion of the opening round of the Penn State University Athletic Conference Golf Championship, Penn State Brandywine stands in a tie for fifth place. The Lions are also tied for 16th in the 22-team field at the United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Championship, which runs concurrently with the conference championship at Penn State University's Blue Course.

Brandywine totaled a four-player count of 354 to match conference foe, Penn State Greater Allegheny. Penn State Wilkes-Barre (350) and Penn State Lehigh Valley (351) are both well within striking distance with 18 holes to play on Tuesday. St. Mary of the Woods (297) tops the USCAA field, while Penn State Hazleton (312) owns the PSUAC Championship lead.

Alex Barone (Glenolden, Pa./Concord) shot a round of 83 to pace the Lions individually. His round was highlighted by three consecutive pars on the second, third and fourth holes as well as the 10th, 11th and 12th holes. Barone tallied nine pars overall during the round.

Zachary Karlton (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) carded a round of 87, which included a birdie on the 10th hole, while Patrick Farrell (Ridley Park, Pa./Ridley) shot 44 on both the front and back nine to total a round of 88.

Payten Bussmann (Glen Eagle, Minn./Sauk Centre) and Margaret Reynolds (West Chester, Pa./Westtown School) shot identical scores of 96. The duo is tied for 12th in the championships' women's field.

The final 18 holes will be played Tuesday beginning at 9:00 AM on Penn State's Blue Course.
