Brandywine Ties For Fifth In PSUAC; 18th In USCAA At Golf Championships

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine golf team concluded the fall 2021 season at the Penn State University Athletic Conference and United States Collegiate Athletic Association Championships on Tuesday afternoon at Penn State University's Blue Course. The Lions tied for fifth in the conference tournament and 18th overall at the national level.

Brandywine compiled 354 strokes as a team during the second round, matching Monday's first-round score, to post a two-day total of 708. The Lions tied with Penn State Fayette, while Bluefield State captured the national title (605) and Penn State Hazleton (629) earned the PSUAC championship.

Alex Barone (Glenolden, Pa./Concord) was the Lions' top individual finisher, placing 53rd in the 121-golfer field and ninth among PSUAC golfers. He recorded a second-round count of 84 following his opening-round 83, totaling 167 strokes at the championship.

Zachary Karlton (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) matched Barone's second-round 84 to produce a 36-hole total of 171, the 11-lowest count in the PSUAC. Patrick Farrell (Ridley Park, Pa./Ridley) recorded a second-straight round of 88 to finish the championships with 176 strokes, tying for 19th in the conference.

Payten Bussmann (Glen Eagle, Minn./Sauk Centre) posted a two-day total of 194 (96-98), while Margaret Reynolds (West Chester, Pa./Westtown School) tallied a championship total of 198 (96-102). Bussmann earned a 14th-place finish in the women's field, while Reynolds placed 15th.

Bluefield State's Jacob Gunther claimed the national championship with a one-over-par total of 145 strokes. The PSUAC champion was Jeremy Harper of Penn State Hazleton, who outlasted Penn State Lehigh Valley's Ian Masenheimer following three playoff holes.
