Brandywine Bows Out Of PSUAC Tournament In Third Place

DUBOIS, Pa. – Third-seeded Penn State Brandywine dropped a pair of games and was knocked out of the Penn State University Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament Sunday afternoon at Showers Field. The Lions dropped a pitchers' duel to top-seeded Penn State DuBois, 2-0, and were downed 11-5 by No. 2 Penn State Mont Alto.

Game One: Penn State DuBois 2, Penn State Brandywine 0

Connor Thompson (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) pitched valiantly for the Lions, throwing all six innings. The all-conference honorable mention selection limited DuBois to two runs on six hits, while striking out four, but took the hard-luck loss. Thompson's complete game was his third of the season.

Brandywine put the leadoff batter on base in four-of-seven innings, but was unable to push across a run against DuBois pitcher Taylor Boland.

Shawn Webb (Drexel Hill, Pa./Bonner-Prendie) led off the sixth inning with a base hit for the Lions' lone knock of the game, while Toby Skeans (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) reached base twice after walking and being hit by a pitch.

Trevor Hanna provided a pair of RBI for DuBois, recording a sacrifice fly to put the hosts on the board in the fourth and a run-scoring single in the sixth.

Game Two: Penn State Mont Alto 11, Penn State Brandywine 5

An eight-run fourth inning from Mont Alto was the difference in the Lions' second game of the day.

Brandywine took a 2-0 lead during the first inning as the Lions' first three batters reached base with hits. Cam Baughman (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) started the inning with a double and scored on Evan Abegg's (Commerce City, Colo./Prairie View) base hit. Nick Wright (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) followed with a single to move Abegg to third. Abegg then crossed home via Tyler Brooks' (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) groundout.

Mont Alto answered with two runs during its half of the first before erupting for eight runs on six hits during the fourth inning to build a 10-2 edge.

Brandywine cut into the margin with three runs in the sixth to get within 10-5. Wright and Brooks recorded back-to-back, one-out singles and both came around to score via Kyle Oechsle's (Coopersburg, Pa./Palisades) double. Brandywine later loaded the bases and plated a third run on Jack Hedger's (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) groundout, but a fly out ended any further damage from the Lions.

The top five hitters in Brandywine's order accounted for all of the Lions' eight hits as Abegg, Brooks and Wright all tallied two knocks and Baughman and Oechsle both tallied doubles.

Brandywine finished its 2022 season with a record of 19-17 after reaching the postseason for the ninth consecutive year.
