Hurta, Lewandowski Spin Shutouts In Sweep
ASTON, Pa. – Isabella Hurta (Colts Neck, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) and April Lewandowski (Atco, N.J./Hammonton) both fired complete-game shutouts as Penn State Brandywine completed a United East Conference softball sweep of St. Elizabeth on Tuesday. Lewandowski blanked the Eagles in a 4-0 game one victory, while Hurta tossed a two-hitter in the 8-0 triumph during the nightcap.
Game One: Penn State Brandywine 4, St. Elizabeth 0
Lewandowski carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before a two-out single broke up the no-hit bid.
Lewandowski settled for a one-hit shutout, her fifth clean slate of the season. She struck out four batters and allowed just two balls to leave the infield to claim her 14th victory of the season.
Brandywine's offense gave Lewandowski all the runs she would need during the first inning, striking for two scores. Lexi Bussenger (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) led off with a single, stole two bases and scored on Emma McElroy's (Mountainside, N.J./Governor Livingston) groundout. Kaylee Mushinski (Allentown, N.J./Allentown) and Ava Craddock (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) followed with back-to-back doubles to put another run on the board.
The scored remained the same until the sixth inning when Jordan DuBois (Southampton, N.J./Seneca) launched her second home run of the season, a two-run shot over the left field fence.
Madie Culbertson (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) recorded three of Brandywine's eight hits, while Craddock collected a pair of knocks.
Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 8, St. Elizabeth 0 (6 innings)
Hurta was perfect through 3.1 frames and allowed just three baserunners overall in the game two victory. During her fourth shutout of the season, Hurta struck out four to record her ninth victory and eighth complete game.
Shelby DeCillis (Iselin, N.J./Colonia) was hit by a pitch to lead off the second inning, moved to third on Culbertson's double and scored via DuBois' base hit to get Brandywine on the board for the first time in the second inning. Culbertson later scored on a passed ball to make the count 2-0.
Brandywine upped the margin to 3-0 one frame later when McElroy crossed home on DeCillis' infield single. McElroy dropped down a squeeze bunt to plate Bussenger, beginning a three-run fifth inning. Craddock tripled in a run and later scored on DeCillis' groundout as Brandywine doubled the margin to 6-0.
The Lions put the game away in the sixth inning, needing just one hit to plate a pair of runs. Shelby Osborne (New Castle, Del./William Penn) worked a walk and later scored on Anna Caporale's (Westampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) ground ball. Culbertson's single scored Caporale with the game-ending run as Brandywine claimed the run-rule victory.
Culbertson tallied her second three-hit game of the day, while Bussenger and McElroy both had a hit and a stolen base and DeCillis drove in two runs.
Brandywine (27-7, 13-1 UEC) visits Immaculata for its final non-conference games Wednesday at 3:00 PM.
