Brandywine Drops Two-Run Games To Fords

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Penn State Brandywine led in both games, but Haverford rallied to sweep the non-conference softball doubleheader by scores of 7-5 and 3-1 on Tuesday afternoon.

Game One: Haverford 7, Penn State Brandywine 5

Brandywine owned a 5-2 lead entering the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Fords scored the final five runs to top the Lions in the opener.

Lianna DeDios (Elmwood Park, N.J./Memorial) and Payton Landis (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) provided sacrifice flies during the second and third innings as the game was tied 2-2 through three frames.

Consecutive bases-loaded walks worked by Gianna Terpolilli (Hammonton, N.J./Our Lady of Mercy Academy), Karly Rees (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) and Landis put Brandywine in front 5-2 in the fourth; however, Haverford scored single runs in their half of the fourth and fifth frames and then took the lead by scoring three times in the sixth.

A walk with the bases loaded forced in the game-tying run, while Mia Kessinger put the Fords in front with a single through the middle and Abby Marquis added an insurance tally with a sacrifice fly.

Jess James (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury), Meghan Ferry (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester City) and Destiny Brophy (Bristol, Pa./Bristol) all recorded a hit and a run scored offensively. Crystal Cassario (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) took the loss after allowing seven runs and striking out one in six innings in the circle.

Game Two: Haverford 3, Penn State Brandywine 1

Ferry staked Brandywine to a 1-0 lead in the first inning with her fourth home run in the last eight days, but that would be all the Lions could muster against Fords' pitcher Emily Rienstadtler, who struck out five and allowed four hits.

Brandywine hurler Rebecca Halford (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) held Haverford off the board until the fourth when a two-out single brought in two runs. The Fords added an insurance run one frame later.

All three runs allowed by Halford were unearned following three Brandywine errors. She fanned one and yielded five hits in six innings.

Brandywine (10-6) opens conference play Friday at Maple Zone against Penn State Scranton at 2:00 PM.
