Brandywine Bounces Back In Sweep Of New Kensington

NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. – One day after suffering its first conference loss, the Penn State Brandywine softball team bounced back in a big way as the Lions' offense scored 33 runs in 11 innings during a doubleheader sweep at Penn State New Kensington. The Lions rolled 13-0 in game one and scored 20 more runs in a 20-8 victory in the nightcap.

Brandywine got off to a slow start before exploding for five runs in the third inning and six more in the sixth of game one.

Jess James (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) and Gianna Casale (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert) both collected three hits. James scored three times, while Casale drove in four runs, as did Meghan Ferry (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester City), who homered for the seventh time this spring.

Ferry and Karly Rees (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) both provided two hits and two runs scored, while Payton Landis (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) and Destiny Brophy (Bristol, Pa./Bristol) each added a pair of knocks.

Casale starting the scoring in the second by singling in Rees. Lianna DeDios' (Elmwood Park, N.J./Memorial) base hit pushed James across home and DeDios later stole home to begin the Lions' five-run third. Landis and Casale both produced run-scoring singles, while Landis crossed home on Rees' two-base hit.

Ferry blasted a three-run home run over the center field fence to push her conference-leading total to seven. Casale added a two-run double and Brophy capped the sixth-inning scoring with an RBI two-base hit.

Crystal Cassario (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) collected her second shutout of the week and fourth of the season. She totaled four strikeouts and scattered nine hits in winning her 12th game.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 20, Penn State New Kensington 8

Brandywine stormed out to a 13-0 lead after one inning and never looked back in the nightcap.

Landis delivered a three-run double and drove in five runs overall in the first inning. She finished with six RBI for the Lions' first six-RBI game in four years.

DeDios went 3-for-5, knocked in two runs and scored three times, while Cassario and Taylor D'Attilio (Hammonton, N.J./Cedar Creek) both produced two hits, two runs and one RBI.

James crossed home a team-high four times and Farrell Everett (Wynnewood, Pa./Haverford) produced  four RBI. Sarah Moore (New Holland, Pa./Pequea Valley) added two hits and two RBI.

Maddie DeFazio (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury) earned her second win of the season as she struck out three during five innings in the circle.

Brandywine visits Penn State Hazleton Wednesday in its final road doubleheader of the season at 2:00 PM.
