Brandywine’s Fourth-Quarter Charge Falls Short In 60-54 Defeat

MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine scored the final 11 points, but it was not enough as the Lions' women's basketball team fell 60-54 at home to Penn State Schuylkill on Saturday afternoon.

Amanda Floyd (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) knocked down three consecutive three-pointers to get Brandywine within eight with less than one minute left. Floyd then found Jenaya Smith (Cohoes, N.Y./Cohoes) on a fast break for a layup to trim the margin to six, but time ran out on the Lions' rally.

After a slow start that saw the Lions trail by 16 points at halftime, Brandywine buried eight second-half three-pointers.

Brandywine cut into its double-figure deficit during the third quarter, slimming the Schuylkill lead as low as nine points when Sierra Diawara (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) drilled a triple with 5:51 to go, capping a run of eight-straight Lion points; however, the visitors held Brandywine to just five points during the final five minutes of the period and held a 12-point edge entering the final quarter.

Schuylkill's lead reached 17 points by the midway point of the fourth before Brandywine's late rally.

Floyd paired 19 points with a team-high 13 rebounds for a double-double, while Diawara poured in 17 points, two shy of her career high. Floyd canned four triples, while Diawara connected for three and Cheyenne Rivas (Thorndale, Pa./Collegium Charter) also knocked down a trio of three-pointers for nine points.

Kaitlyn Johnson (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby) handed out a game-high six assists, while Amelia Brooks (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) grabbed six rebounds.

Brandywine was marred by 4-of-17 shooting from the free throw line and Schuylkill held a 55-44 edge on the boards, including 19 offensive rebounds.

Brandywine (7-12, 4-6 PSUAC) is back at home Tuesday to face Penn State Lehigh Valley at 6:00 PM.
