Brandywine Sweeps Cheyney In Final Non-Conference Match

MEDIA, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine volleyball team completed the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 3-0 sweep (25-2, 25-16, 25-12) of Cheyney University on Wednesday night.

The Lions started hot, running out to a 13-0 lead in the first set behind four aces from Laura Jezyk (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth). The Wolves netted the next two points, but a 12-0 run to end the set, aided by three-straight kills from Anna Ramirez (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) and two aces by Amanda Floyd (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) gave Brandywine a 1-0 edge.

The teams swapped points until midway through the second period when a 5-0 Brandywine spurt gave the Lions a 17-12 advantage. Behind two aces and a kill from Jezyk, Brandywine pulled away late in the frame, winning 25-16.

A run 9-1 run handed the Lions an 11-3 lead during the final frame and the Lions would cruise to the finish, claiming a 25-12 final set.

Ramirez led the Lions with seven kills, while Floyd tallied five, along with three aces, and Savannah Bauer (San Jose, Calif./Santa Teresa) recorded four kills. Jezyk handed out 22 assists and posted six aces.

Suzie Alvarenga (Fullerton, Calif./Notre Dame Academy), this week's PSUAC Player of the Week, added five aces and matched Jezyk for the team lead with nine digs.

Sydney Stevens (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. DuPont) collected six digs, while Floyd totaled three blocks.

Brandywine (9-9, 6-3 PSUAC) plays its final road match of the regular season Saturday when the Lions visit Penn State Lehigh Valley at 1:00 PM.
