Brandywine Tops Scranton In Late-Night Affair

MEDIA, Pa. – Penn State Brandywine remained the only undefeated team in Penn State University Athletic Conference women's basketball as the Lions celebrated the final day of fall classes with a 72-46 Midnight Madness victory over Penn State Scranton on Friday.

The Lions led from the jump as Brandi James (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) and Kendra Stanford (Philadelphia, Pa./William Bodine) combined for 16 points and 12 rebounds during the opening 10 minutes, to help Brandywine jump out to a double-figure lead. Stanford buried a jumper with 40 ticks remaining in the period to set the Brandywine lead at 22-9 after one quarter.

Nikki Velez (Gloucester, N.J./Gloucester City) connected on a pair of threes to start the third quarter, extending the margin to 19 points. Scranton pulled as close as 13 points at 30-17, but Brandywine answered with the final six points of the stanza, making the score 36-17 the half.

The third quarter began with a 16-2 Brandywine surge capped by Crystal Miller's (Pleasant Valley, N.Y./Arlington) layup at the 3:28 mark that put the game out of reach.

James recorded a 15-point, 11 rebound double-double, her fourth in the last five games, while Stanford collected 13 points, nine boards and three steals. On the strength of four triples, Velez registered 12 points along with six rebounds and Chantel Hatton (Philadelphia, Pa./Chester) contributed eight points and three boards.

Brandywine held a large advantage on the boards, outrebounding Scranton 51-32, and forced 24 turnovers.

Scranton was paced by Molly Burke's 22 points.

Brandywine (6-3, 3-0 PSUAC) visits Eastern University on Dec. 20 at 5:00 pm for its final game before the holiday break.
