Brandywine Holds Off Schuylkill To Win Conference Opener

MEDIA, Pa. -- Two second-half goals from Jess James (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) were enough to hand the Penn State Brandywine women's soccer team a victory in its Penn State University Athletic Conference opener as the Lions fought off a late rally from Penn State Schuylkill on Tuesday.

With the match tied 1-1, James scored the go-ahead goal during the 63rd minute thanks to a feed from Gia Cetroni (Coatesville, Pa./Downingtown West). Less than 10 minutes later, James found the back of the net once again, this time after a crossing pass from Roberta Gonzalez (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East), adding an insurance goal for the Lions.

Brandywine would need the insurance tally from James as Brittany Bartasavage brought the visitors within one with less than 10 minutes to play in regulation. Schuylkill continued to press, but Brandywine goalkeeper Demareste Dorvilma (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) turned away the final shot she faced to preserve the victory.

Dorvilma made seven stops overall, including five during the first half.

Schuylkill netted the match's first goal at the 4:47 mark of the first half, but it took just 60 seconds for Brandywine to equal the count, scoring thanks to a Schuylkill own goal.

The Lions held a 16-11 edge in shots after recording an 11-3 edge during the final 45 minutes.

Brandywine (1-1-1, 1-0 PSUAC) will visit Penn State Beaver Saturday at 2:00 PM for the Lions' first road match of the season.
