Lions Take Doubleheader From York

ASTON, Pa. – After blanking Penn State York 3-0 in game one, Penn State Brandywine overcame a six-run deficit and completed the PSUAC baseball doubleheader sweep with a 7-6 triumph in the nightcap.

Three Brandywine pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout in the opener. Chris Skahill (Media, Pa./Penncrest) moved to 2-0 on the season after firing five scoreless innings. He struck out one and scattered three hits. Bradley Ulmer (Newark, Del./St. George's Tech) pitched a scoreless sixth inning and Nate Forwood (Wilmington, Del./Mt. Pleasant) shut the door in the seventh, earning his second save.

Brandywine grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first as leadoff hitter Pat Tackney (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) was hit by a pitch and came around to score on Doug Medrano's (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream Central) double.

The Lions added two more runs in the fourth on four hits. Tom Osenbach (Newtown Square, Pa./West Chester Christian) led off with a single and moved to third on Matt Masi's (West Chester, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) two-base hit. Tommy Crumlish (Upper Darby, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) and Dan McMenamin (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) followed with back-to-back RBI singles, upping the lead to three.

Masi reached base all three at-bats in game one and six different players recorded hits for Brandywine overall.

The Lions staked York to a 6-0 edge in game two, but began to chip away when they scored three times in the fourth. Osenbach got the rally started with a two-run double off the left field fence and three batters later, Crumlish looped a single into left-center field, scoring Osenbach with Brandywine's third run.

Anthony Bianchini (Long Island, N.Y./Long Beach) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the sixth to force home the Lions' fourth run before Brandywine completed its third walk-off victory of the year and second in three days by plating three runs in the seventh. A trio of runs scored and six runners reached base during the final inning despite Brandywine not recording a single hit during the frame.

After a pair of walks and a groundout, Osenbach reached on an error that scored Kevin Dougherty (West Chester, Pa./Rustin) to make the count 6-5. Masi walked to load the bases and McMenamin followed with a base on balls that forced in pinch-runner Matt Gallo (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) with the tying run. Crumlish then grounded a ball to first base and Tackney sped home before the throw from first with the winning run, upping Brandywine's winning streak to four games.

Osenbach recorded a pair of hits and drove in three during game two, while Crumlish knocked in a pair and Steve Trainor (Broomall, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) tallied two hits.

Dave DiMeglio (Morton, Pa./Ridley) picked up his first collegiate victory after pitching 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. DiMeglio fanned three and held York without a hit, retiring the final 10 batters he faced.

Brandywine (11-14, 7-1 PSUAC) heads to Pittsburgh for a four-game weekend swing beginning Saturday at Penn State Greater Allegheny.
