Brandywine Offense Overwhelms Hazleton

HAZLETON, Pennsylvania -- John Gorgone (Ridley, Pa./Ridley) hit three home runs, including two in the same inning in game two, as Penn State Brandywine put a combined 35 runs on the scoreboard during a doubleheader sweep of Penn State Hazleton on Tuesday afternoon. Brandywine won game one 17-2 and took game two by an 18-4 score.

Pat Tackney (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) and Steve Trainor (Broomall, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara), this week's USCAA Player of the Week, both went 3-for-3 at the plate in game one, while Tom Osenbach (Newtown Square, Pa./West Chester Christian) added two hits and four RBI and Gorgone collected three RBI and scored three times.

Trainor's RBI double got the scoring started in the first inning and Osenbach followed with a two-run double.

Brandywine broke the game open by scoring nine times during the second inning. Tackney hit his first home run of the season, a two-run blast to left field, and later singled in two runs, while Osenbach drove in one with a base hit and Kevin Dougherty (West Chester, Pa./Rustin) added an RBI double.

Gorgone's three-run home run, an inside-the-parker, highlighted a five-run fourth inning for the Lions.

Chris Skahill (Media, Pa./Penncrest) moved to 3-0 this season after holding Hazleton to a pair of earned runs on seven hits, while striking out six in five innings on the mound.

Brandywine jumped on Hazleton again in the first inning of game two as Osenbach knocked in a pair of runs with a single to give the Lions a 2-0 lead.

Gorgone's two-run home run jumpstarted a big third inning for Brandywine, which tagged Hazleton pitching for 13 runs during the frame. Matt Masi (West Chester, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) tacked on an RBI double, while Anthony Bianchini (Long Island, N.Y./Long Beach), Dan McMenamin (Springfield, Pa./Springfield), Doug Medrano (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream Central) and Tommy Crumlish (Upper Darby, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) added run-scoring singles.

Gorgone's second home run of the inning, a grand slam, completed the 13-run outburst. Two innings later, Bianchini added a three-run blast to cap the scoring.

Gorgone totaled six RBI and three hits, while Dougherty scored three times and Bianchini collected two hits and four RBI.

Frank Newman (Ridley, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) evened his record at 2-2 after striking out a pair and allowing four runs in five innings of work.

Brandywine (17-14, 13-1 PSUAC) hosts Williamson Trade Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 pm in its final non-conference game of the season.
