Offense Comes Alive; Michaels Throws Third Shutout In Win Over York

ASTON, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine senior right-hander Tyler Michaels (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) fired his third complete-game shutout of the year, while the Lions' offense matched a season high with 15 hits during a 10-0 PSUAC baseball victory over Penn State York on Thursday evening.

Michaels, who now owns a 5-1 record, brought a no-hitter into the fifth inning after retiring 11-straight batters following a one-out walk in the first. He settled for a three-hitter, while allowing a runner to reach scoring position just twice. Michaels induced a ground out, one of 10 on the night, to work out of a bases-loaded, two-out jam in the sixth, helping him to lower his ERA in six conference appearances to 0.28. 

All nine batters got in the hit column for the Lions, topped by Ben Mutz (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven), who had three hits in five at-bats, falling a home run short of the cycle.

Hayden Altimari (Dix Hills, N.Y./St. Anthony's Prep) added two hits and drove in three runs, while Brian Reynolds (Newtown  Square, Pa./Maple Newtown), Joey Buoni (Chester Heights, Pa./Salesianum) and Nick Kutufaris (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) all tallied two hits.

Altimari's infield single scored Dalton Palmer (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) with Brandywine's first run in the fourth inning. The Lions tacked on four more one frame later as Altimari knocked in two with a base hit, Kutufaris recorded an RBI single and Mutz tripled and then scored on Buoni's sacrifice fly.

Buoni's RBI single in the sixth upped the lead to 6-0. He later scored via a York error, while Palmer crossed home on a groundout. Reynolds ended the game by run rule in the seventh, tallying a bases-loaded single that pushed home Tom Donahue (Ridley, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara), who had doubled in Kutufaris earlier in the inning.

Brandywine (13-14, 5-5 PSUAC) visits York for the final two games of the series on Saturday beginning at 2:00 pm at PeoplesBank Park.
