Brandywine Secures Postseason Bid With Win At Scranton

SCRANTON, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine baseball team officially locked up a berth in the Penn State University Athletic Conference Tournament for the seventh consecutive season following a 24-5 victory at Penn State Scranton on Thursday.

The Lions will likely be the No. 3 seed from the East Division in the tournament, but could move into the No. 2 spot with wins during its final two games, plus three losses by Penn State Schuylkill.

Brandywine easily dispatched of Scranton, scoring runs in six-of-seven innings. The Lions put five runs on the board in the first inning and upped the lead to 10-1 after three frames. Thirteen batters came to the plate during an eight-run seventh inning.

Nick Wright (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) was 4-for-4 with two RBI and two stolen bases, while Joey Buoni (Chester Heights, Pa./Salesianum) and Brian Reynolds (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) both drove in three runs.

Ten Lions produced at least one hit and eight collected multiple knocks. Joe Hurley (Downingtown, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) scored four times, while Ben Mutz (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) and Tom Donahue (Ridley, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) each drove in a pair and scored three runs.

Ricky Palmer (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) and Chris Edwards (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) aided in the eight-run seventh as Palmer produced a two-run double and a base hit, while Edwards had two singles and knocked in a run.

Tyler Michaels (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) improved to 6-1 this spring, striking out four, while allowing two runs on four hits in five innings.

Brandywine (17-15, 8-5 PSUAC) hosts Central Penn on Saturday at 2:00 pm for its final non-conference game of the season.
