Brandywine Bests York 10-1; Advances To Tournament Winners Bracket

ASTON, Pa. -- Top-seeded Penn State Brandywine throttled No. 2 Penn State York by a 10-1 score during the first round of the Penn State University Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament as the Lions moved into the winners bracket Thursday night.

Brandywine built a 7-0 lead through two innings and never looked back, earning its program-record 26th victory of the season.

Overall, the Lions' offense accounted for 12 hits, half of which went for extra bases, while Connor Thompson (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) tossed a complete game to earn his team-best fifth victory of the season. Thompson struck out one, allowed one earned run and scattered eight hits.

Brandywine jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one inning as two runners crossed home on Shawn Webb's (Drexel Hill, Pa./Bonner-Prendie) two-out double.

Kyle Oechsle (Coopersburg, Pa./Palisades) started a five-run second frame with a leadoff home run, a lengthy shot over the right field fence. Two batters later, Ryan Snyder (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) doubled and Cam Baughman (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) followed with a base hit, scoring Snyder. Baughman upped the margin to 3-0 when he swiped home as part of a double steal, while Mike DeGirolamo (Frederick, Md./Frederick) tacked on two more runs with a two-base hit.

York got on the board for the first time in the fifth inning, but Brandywine answered with two runs during the bottom of the frame. Snyder's ground ball scored a run and Evan Abegg (Commerce City, Colo./Prairie View) added a run-scoring single. Ryan Brown's (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) RBI double plated Webb with the game's final tally during the sixth inning.

Abegg produced three hits, scored twice and stole a bag, while Baughman and DeGirolamo both tallied a pair of hits. Webb collected two RBI and a stolen base.

Brandywine (26-12) will play a winners bracket game on Sunday, May 7 at 2:00 PM at Medlar Field in State College. The Lions' opponent will be determined this weekend.
