Brandywine Extends Winning Streak To Nine With 4-2 Victories

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Penn State Brandywine baseball team's winning streak sits at nine following a pair of 4-2 victories over Penn State Hazleton on Saturday as the Lions completed a four-game sweep of the weekend series.

Game One: Penn State Brandywine 4, Penn State Hazleton 2

Brandywine ran out to a three-run lead and doubled up Hazleton for its third-straight victory in the series during the opener.

Michael Govan (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) turned in Brandywine's third consecutive strong performance on the mound. He limited Hazleton to two runs (one earned) on three hits, while striking out six in seven innings to claim the win.

Brandywine scored twice during the first inning as Mike DeGirolamo (Frederick, Md./Frederick) doubled in a pair of runs. Two innings later, Owen Lawton (Glenmoore, Pa./Downingtown East) added the Lions' third score, lining a single through the left side of the infield, scoring Max Tavarez (Woodbridge, N.J./Woodbridge).

Hazleton got two runs back in the third, but Brandywine added an insurance marker in the fifth. Sam Benvignati (Aston, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) used a single to plate Cam Baughman (Oxford, Pa./Oxford), who scored from second after doubling two batters earlier.

Hazleton put two runners on base with one out in the seventh, but Govan rolled a double play groundball to end the game.

Baughman, Benvignati, DeGirolamo and Lawton all tallied two-hit efforts to pace the offense.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 4, Penn State Hazleton 2

Josh Hess (Panama City, Fla./Arnold) and Ty Coccia (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) combined for another stellar pitching performance to lead the Lions to a second-straight 4-2 triumph.

Hess blanked Hazleton for five innings before working into a bases-loaded jam in the sixth. After Coccia entered in relief, an error allowed two Hazleton runs to cross home, but Coccia induced a groundout to end the threat.

Coccia worked a 1-2-3 seventh inning to earn his second save of the season. Hess earned his third win of the season after fanning six and allowing two hits over 5.1 frames.

Baughman helped Brandywine to a 2-0 edge through three innings as he doubled and scored via error in the first before scoring Ryan Snyder (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) with a base hit two innings later.

The Lions made the count 3-0 when Shawn Webb (Drexel Hill, Pa./Bonner-Prendie) recorded a single that scored Ryan Brown (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) in the sixth.

After Hazleton trimmed the margin to 3-2, Brown added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning.

Baughman added two more hits in game two, while Webb had a hit, an RBI and a stolen base.

Brandywine (15-8, 10-2 PSUAC) travels to Central Penn Tuesday for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 PM.
