Brandywine Pitching Leads Lions To Sweep; Abegg Collects 100th Hit

ASTON, Pa. – Two Penn State Brandywine pitchers combined to hold Penn State Hazleton to one run on three hits over two games as the Lions swept a Penn State University Athletic Conference doubleheader from Hazleton on Friday evening. Brandywine edged Hazleton 1-0 in game one and rolled to an 11-1 triumph in the nightcap, highlighted by the 100th-career hit from Evan Abegg (Commerce City, Colo./Prairie View).

Game One: Penn State Brandywine 1, Penn State Hazleton 0

Brandywine clipped Hazleton in a duel of team aces in game one, winning 1-0.

Connor Thompson (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) outlasted Hazleton's Eli Tyrell, spinning his first complete-game shutout. He limited Hazleton to just one hit, a leadoff single in the third, and struck out two over seven innings to improve to 6-1.

Thompson worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the third, the only inning of the day that Hazleton put two runners on base, and was not threatened the rest of the way.

Terrell was nearly as good, holding Brandywine off the scoreboard until the sixth inning. Brandywine pushed across the lone run of the game thanks to a sacrifice fly from Abegg that scored Shawn Webb (Drexel Hill, Pa./Bonner-Prendie). Webb worked a walk to start the frame, moved to second via Ryan Snyder's (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) sacrifice bunt and stole third to setup the sacrifice fly.

Snyder, Webb and Cam Baughman (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) accounted for Brandywine's three hits. Webb stole a pair of bases, while Baughman swiped one.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 11, Penn State Hazleton 1

Jaylen Bryant (Brooklyn, N.Y./High School of Telecommunications) turned in a start nearly as strong as Thompson as he did not allow an earned run and struck out six over five innings during the Lions' 11-1 triumph in the nightcap.

Bryant, who was named PSUAC Pitcher of the Week last week, limited Hazleton to just two hits, both singles and yielded just an unearned marker during the third inning.

Brandywine got the offense going in game two, scoring at least two runs during all five innings.

Baughman's RBI double highlighted a two-run first inning. Owen Lawton (Glenmoore, Pa./Downingtown East) tripled and scored via Toby Skeans' (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) groundout, while Abegg added a run-scoring single to up the lead to 4-0 one frame later.

Lawton cleared the bases with his second triple of the night during the third inning to up the margin to 7-1. Skeans tacked on a two-run double in the fourth and Baughman and Mike DeGirolamo (Frederick, Md./Frederick) both tallied run-scoring knocks in the fifth.

DeGirolamo led the 12-hit effort with three hits in four at-bats, while Abegg, Baughman and Lawton all collected two hits. Abegg entered the 100-hit club by legging out an infield single during the bottom of the fifth inning. He became the 12th player in team history to reach 100 career hits.

Brandywine (13-8, 8-2 PSUAC) visits Hazleton Saturday for the final two games of the weekend series Saturday at noon.
