Brandywine Completes Four-Game Series Sweep Of Wilkes-Barre
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – One day after outscoring Penn State Wilkes-Barre 20-1, the Penn State Brandywine baseball team piled up 45 runs to complete a four-game sweep of Wilkes-Barre. The Lions won by scores of 28-6 and 17-1 Friday afternoon.
Game One: Penn State Brandywine 28, Penn State Wilkes-Barre 6
Brandywine collected 17 hits and took advantage of 12 walks issued by Wilkes-Barre pitching to ease toa 28-6 victory in five innings to start the day.
Ryan Snyder (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) recorded team highs with three knocks, five runs batted in, three stolen bases and three runs scored. Ryan Brown (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) and Max Tavarez (Woodbridge, N.J./Woodbridge) both crossed home three times and swiped two bags, while Tommy Zotollo (Washington Township, N.J./St. Joseph's Palisades) was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored and Shawn Webb (Drexel Hill, Pa./Bonner-Prendie) added two hits, two RBI and two runs.
Cam Baughman (Oxford, Pa./Oxford), Owen Lawton (Glenmoore, Pa./Downingtown East) and Derek Wenskoski (Roselle Park, N.J./Roselle Park) all went deep. Baughman and Lawton both hit three-run long balls during an 11-run second inning, while Wenskoski added a three-run shot to cap an eight-run fifth inning. The Lions also scored nine times during the fourth inning.
Josh Hess (Panama City, Fla./Arnold) pitched the first 2.2 innings, allowing four runs (one earned) on four hits, while striking out one and earned the win. Kaleb Merendino (Glen Mills, Pa./Penncrest) fanned four and yielded two runs (one earned) during the final 2.1 frames.
Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 17, Penn State Wilkes-Barre 1
Brandywine ended the nightcap by run rule after scoring 17 more runs and completing the series sweep of Wilkes-Barre.
Sam Benvignati (Aston, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) went 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Baughman also drove in three runs and posted two hits. Brown, Lawton and Mike DeGirolamo (Frederick, Md./Frederick) also tallied two hits each.
Benvignati recorded a run-scoring double and Brown and Lawton both added RBI singles during a four-run first inning.
An error allowed two more runs to score in the third before Abegg doubled in a run and Baughman and Benvignati registered consecutive run-scoring base hits in the fourth.
Wenskoski cleared the bases with a double to cap an eight-run fifth frame that also included run-scoring hits from Baughman and Lawton.
Michael Govan (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) struck out four and limited Wilkes-Barre to one run on three hits in five innings to earn the win on the mound.
Brandywine (11-8, 6-2 PSUAC) visits Neumann for a non-conference game Wednesday at 3:30 PM.
