Brandywine Can’t Overcome Slow Start Against Gwynedd Mercy

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. -- Gwynedd Mercy scored the first 16 points of the game and defeated the Penn State Brandywine men's basketball team 92-47 on Saturday afternoon.

The Lions were held off the scoreboard until Damir Shelley (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) sank a layup at the 14:33 mark. The Griffins' defense limited the Lions to just four field goals during the opening half as Gwynedd Mercy opened up a 44-12 lead at intermission.

The Griffins continued to pull away, outscoring the Lions 48-35 during the second period.

Alexander Derkits (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) accounted for 14 of Brandywine's points on 5-of-8 shooting, while Javon Nelson (Philadelphia, Pa./String Theory) collected seven points.

Jaden Fogg (Morrsville, Pa./Morrisville) grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and Derkits handed out a team-best three assists.

Gwynedd Mercy shot 55 percent from the field and knocked down 15 three-pointers.

Brandywine (2-5) will open United East Conference play Tuesday at Penn College at 7:00 PM.
