Young’s Record-Setting Day Paces Brandywine At Golden Ram Invitational

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Braden Young (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) set a pair of Penn State Brandywine team records, while winning both the discus and shot put as the Lions made their 2021 outdoor track and field debut Saturday afternoon at West Chester University's Golden Ram Invitational.

Young paced all discus throwers by a wide margin, posting a long toss of 39.32 meters, to top second-place Ryan Matthews of Marywood by nearly 12 meters. He bested Caleb Madison's two-year-old school benchmark by almost 10 meters.

In the shot put, Young topped the six-man field with a long heave of 14.15 meters. That throw is 3.78 meters longer than Miko Allen's previous school record set in 2019 and was 1.29 meters longer than his closest competitor, Tati White of Division II Jefferson University.

Isaac Canenguez (Worcester, Mass./University Park Campus School) entered the Brandywine record book with the program's second-best long jump in its history. Canenguez placed sixth with a top leap of 5.45 meters, just 0.16 meters off a team record.

Canenguez also placed fourth in the 100-meter dash in a time of 12.86 seconds, while teammate Aiden Brown (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) was just in front of him in third after running to a time of 12.52 seconds.

Brown added a sixth-place showing at 200 meters (25.87 seconds) and Mohammed Iyoun (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) posted a second-place finish during the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:14.59.

"Braden Young kick-started his career today. I am so proud of the hard work he has done with Coach Tim Sanville. All of our competitors deserve to be proud of their hard work and performances during this difficult time," said first-year Head Coach Tom Kennedy, who was appointed to lead the team in February.
