Brandywine Rolls To Doubleheader Sweep Of Hazleton

ASTON, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine baseballl team took advantage of 23 walks issued by Penn State Hazleton pitching as the Lions cruised to a doubleheader sweep at Maple Zone on Friday night. Brandywine claimed game one by a 10-5 score before rolling in the nightcap, 15-2.

Tommy Crumlish (Upper Darby, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) put Brandywine on the scoreboard with an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning of game one. One frame later, Matt Masi (West Chester, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) and Brian Reynolds (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) stroked back-to-back run-scoring base hits, capping a four-run inning.

The Lions tacked on two more runs during both the third and fourth innings before Crumlish's second RBI single of the game in the fifth upped Brandywine's lead to 10-2.

Crumlish delivered two of Brandywine's six hits, while Masi knocked in two and scored three times. Brett Sheeran (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) also drove in a pair of runs.

Tyler Michaels (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) went the first 5.1 innings on the mound, picking up his second win of the spring. He struck out six and allowed five earned runs on six hits. Kevin Sessa (Broomall, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.

Brandywine put together three-run innings during the second and fourth frames before closing out the game by scoring four runs in back-to-back innings in support of pitcher Bradley Ulmer (Newark, Del./St. George's Tech). Ulmer tossed a complete game, striking out seven, while surrendering just one earned run on five hits.

Sheeran's RBI double and pair of Hazleton errors put Brandywine in front 3-0 in the second inning. The Lions added to their lead two frames later when Sheeran sent another two-base hit into left-center field, scoring Chris Skahill (Media, Pa./Penncrest) before Masi delivered his PSUAC-leading seventh home run of the season, an opposite field blast, upping the margin to 6-0.

Skahill and Anthony Polanco (Long Island, N.Y./West Babylon) both delivered two-run hits in the sixth to provide Brandywine with four more scores, while Tony Valente (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) added a two-run single and Sessa recorded an RBI on a fielder's choice in the seventh to complete the scoring.

Sheeran and Skahill both registered two hits during the nightcap, while Polanco crossed home three times and was one of five players that drove in a pair of runs.

Brandywine (9-12, 5-1 PSUAC) and Hazleton's three-game series concludes Sunday at 1:00 pm at North Berwick Baseball Field.
