Brandywine Earns 30th Victory In Regular-Season Finale

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – The Penn State Brandywine softball team earned its 30th win of the season during game one, giving the Lions three-straight years of 30-plus victories, but Delaware Valley rallied to earn a split by winning game two 17-9 during the final regular-season doubleheader for Brandywine on Tuesday.

Game One: Penn State Brandywine 5, Delaware Valley 2

Payton Landis (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) delivered a go-ahead RBI single during the top of the seventh inning as Brandywine claimed game one by a 5-2 score.

Lexi Bussenger (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) reached via error and stole second base to move into scoring position to begin the seventh. Three batters later, Landis drove a single into right field, plating Bussenger with the Lions' third run of the day. A double from Karly Rees (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) and walk issued to Emily Reagan (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) loaded the bases for Crystal Cassario (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury), who helped her own cause by scoring two insurance runs with a base hit.

Cassario retired the Aggies in order in the seventh to earn her 10th win of the spring. She fired seven innings, recording four strikeouts, while allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits. Cassario also tallied two hits at the plate.

The Lions scratched across a two-out run in the first as Meghan Ferry (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester City) doubled and scored on Landis' single. Naya Rivera (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest) added a run-scoring base hit one frame later for a 2-0 Brandywine lead.

The Aggies registered an unearned run in the third before tying the game with a marker during the bottom of the sixth inning.

Landis and Ferry were 2-for-4 at the plate, while Jess James (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) singled, scored a run and stole two bases.

Game Two: Delaware Valley 17, Penn State Brandywine 9

Brandywine held three separate four-run leads, but Delaware Valley rallied each time, including a 12-run sixth inning to claim a split of the doubleheader.

The Aggies recorded 10-straight hits against three Brandywine pitchers during the sixth inning to rally from a 9-5 deficit.

Kaylee Mushinski (Allentown, N.J./Allentown) recorded a pair of two-run doubles to give her 62 RBI on the season as she broke her own program single-season RBI record set last year. Bussenger tallied a sixth-inning single and has now hit safely in all 38 games this spring.

Landis launched her second home run of the season, a two-run shot, to give the Lions a 4-0 lead in the second inning. Becky Valente (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) collected a two-run single in the fifth, while Rees knocked in Mushinski with a single in the sixth.

Brandywine (30-8, 17-1 PSUAC) will now set its sights on the PSUAC Tournament as the Lions will look to win a ninth-straight conference title. The Lions will host the first two days of the tournament beginning Friday at 1:30 PM at Maple Zone.
