Brandywine Blanks Beaver For Sweep

NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. – Penn State Brandywine pitching fired a shutout during both ends of a softball doubleheader as the Lions swept Penn State Beaver by scores of 8-0 and 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.

Game One: Penn State Brandywine 8, Penn State Beaver 0

Brandywine offense racked up 13 hits in five innings and rolled to an 8-0 victory in game one.

Payton Landis (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) posted three hits and four RBI, while Lexi Bussenger (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two stolen bases. Kaylee Mushinski (Allentown, N.J./Allentown) added two hits, two runs and three RBI and Karly Rees (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) notched a pair of hits.

Bussenger singled, stole second and scored on Mushinski's base hit to open the scoring in the first. Landis followed with a two-base hit, scoring Mushinski to up the margin to 2-0.

The duo of Mushinski and Landis pushed two more runs across in the fourth as Bussenger crossed home via Mushinski's two-base hit and Mushinski came around to score on Landis' single.

Brandywine put the game away by scoring four times in the fifth. After Meghan Ferry (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester City) worked a bases-loaded walk and Mushinski added a run with a ground out, Landis ended the game by run rule with a two-run single to center.

Crystal Cassario (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) pitched all five innings to earn the win, her seventh of the season. Cassario fired the 11th complete-game shutout of her career by striking out seven and limiting Beaver to just four hits.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 1, Penn State Beaver 0

Beaver held the Lions' offense in check, but April Lewandowski (Atco, N.J./Hammonton) spun a one-hit shutout to help Brandywine complete the sweep.

Lewandowski surrendered a leadoff walk in the first and a single to start the fourth, but worked around each baserunner to record her second shutout of the spring. Lewandowski tallied six strikeouts over seven innings to win her third game of the week and PSUAC-high ninth game of the season.

Brandywine got all of the offense it would need during the bottom of the fifth inning. Becky Valente (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) battled back from down 0-2 in the count to work a walk and advanced a bag when Bussenger was issued a base on balls. Valente then scored from second on a two-out wild pitch to account for the game's lone run.

Mushinski registered the only extra-base hit of the game with a triple in the third, while Bussenger extended her hitting streak to 27-straight games with a third-inning single.

Brandywine (20-6, 11-1 PSUAC) hosts Cabrini Tuesday at Maple Zone beginning at 3:00 PM.
