Brandywine Knocks Off Schuylkill

ASTON, Pa. – The Penn State Brandywine softball team improved to 14-0 at home this season following victories over Penn State Schuylkill by scores of 14-0 and 3-0 on Friday afternoon.

Game One: Penn State Brandywine 14, Penn State Schuylkill 0

Thanks to three Schuylkill errors, Brandywine blew the game open early, scoring eight times during the first inning en route to a 14-0 triumph in the opener.

The Lions received run-scoring doubles from Kaylee Mushinski (Allentown, N.J./Allentown) and Karly Rees (Oxford, Pa./Oxford), while Naya Rivera (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest) drove in a run with an infield single during the eight-run frame. Six of the Lions' eight runs were unearned following a trio of Schuylkill miscues.

Brandywine added six more runs during the third inning. Meghan Ferry (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester City) and Mushinski recorded back-to-back, two-run doubles, while Rees scored Mushinski with a sacrifice fly and Jess James (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) stole home as part of a double steal.

The 14 runs were more than enough for Crystal Cassario (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury), who earned her eighth victory of the season. She tossed a two-hit shutout, recording seven strikeouts in five innings of work.

Mushinski posted two hits and three RBI, while Rivera and James both scored two runs. Lexi Bussenger (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) crossed home three times and stole three bases.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 3, Penn State Schuylkill 0

Brandywine recorded its fourth-straight victory via shutout to complete the sweep in game two.

Two-time PSUAC Pitcher of the Week April Lewandowski (Atco, N.J./Hammonton) registered her conference-best 10th win of the season after spinning a four-hit shutout. Lewandowski fanned seven hitters and has now allowed just one earned run in 31.0 innings against PSUAC opponents this spring.

Brandywine struck for its first run in the third inning as Bussenger walked, stole two bases and scored on Mushinski's two-out single. Rees led off the fourth inning with a triple and crossed home via Emily Reagan's (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) sacrifice fly.

Bussenger showed off her speed once again in the fifth, rounding the bases for her second-career inside-the-park home run on a line drive down the left field line.

Bussenger tallied two hits, two runs scored and three stolen bases, while Mushinski collected her second two-hit game of the day.

Brandywine (22-6, 13-1 PSUAC) travels to Cabrini for a 3:00 PM doubleheader Tuesday.
