Brandywine Splits Doubleheader With Cabrini; Mushinski Hits Milestones

MEDIA, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine softball team saw its eight-game winning streak end during a 2-0 game one defeat, but the Lions bounced back to knock off Cabrini 14-3 in game two to earn a split of the non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday. Sophomore outfielder Kaylee Mushinski (Allentown, N.J./Allentown) recorded the 100th hit and 100th RBI of her career during the nightcap.

Game One: Cabrini 2, Penn State Brandywine 0

The Lions stranded eight baserunners, including six in scoring position, as Brandywine was blanked for just the third time this spring.

Brandywine put runners on second and third with no outs in the seventh, but Avery Byrnes retired the next three batters to work out of the jam and end the game. The Lions also left runners on second and third during the first inning.

Crystal Cassario (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) limited Cabrini to two runs on six hits and struck out one in six innings, but took the loss, dropping to 8-4 this spring. Lexi Bussenger (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) and Naya Rivera (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest) both recorded two-hit games to account for four of Brandywine's six hits.

Katelyn Delaney accounted for both Cabrini runs with a RBI ground out in the first and a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 14, Cabrini 3

Brandywine's offense woke up during game two as the Lions collected 14 runs on 19 hits.

Mushinski's two-run single during the sixth inning was her third of the game and 100th of career. She reached triple digits in hits during her 71st career game, while also becoming the fourth player in program history to tally 100 RBI with a run-scoring single in the second.

In addition to Mushinski, Bussenger, Payton Landis (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) and Emily Reagan (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) all registered three hits. Meghan Ferry (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester City), Sarah Moore (New Holland, Pa./Pequea Valley) and Karly Rees (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) all added two hits.

Landis doubled in Bussenger and scored via error to give Brandywine a 2-0 lead through one inning. Another Cabrini miscue added a run in the second before Mushinski drove in her 100th run with a base hit, moving the margin to 4-0.

Rivera doubled and scored before Ferry tacked on a two-run double in the third.

Cabrini answered with three runs during the bottom of the third, but Brandywine put the game away by pushing six runs across in the sixth. Mushinski produced a two-run single and scored on a wild pitch, while Rees doubled in Landis and Sam Gonchar (Brick Township, N.J./Monroe Township) added a sacrifice fly.

April Lewandowski (Atco, N.J./Hammonton) improved to 11-2 in the circle after striking out one and allowing three runs on five hits in six innings. Maddie DeFazio (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury) spun a scoreless seventh inning.

Brandywine (23-7, 13-2 PSUAC) returns to Maple Zone Thursday night for Senior Night against Immaculata beginning at 5:00 PM.
