Brandywine Splits With Abington To Begin Fall Season

MEDIA, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine men's tennis team earned a 5-4 victory over Penn State Abington, while the Lions' women's tennis squad dropped a 7-2 decision to Abington in the season opener for both teams on Saturday.

The Brandywine men claimed a pair of doubles triumphs and won three-of-five singles matches to edge Abington.

The duo of Joe Braud (Moseley, Va./Cosby) and Zach Champine (Coto de Caza, Calif./Jserra Catholic) combined for three of the Lions' triumphs. Braud and Champine teamed for an 8-1 victory during their No. 1 doubles match and both won their singles matches in straight sets. Champine was a 6-1, 6-2 winner at No. 1, while Braud recorded a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 2.

Alexander Michael (Middletown, N.Y./Middletown) and John Stine (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) registered Brandywine's second doubles point, winning 9-7 during their third-flight match. Aggam Khurana (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) tallied Brandywine's fifth win of the afternoon, earning a 6-3, 6-4 victory in the sixth flight.

On the women's side, Brandywine claimed both of its match victories by default.

Jackie Capers (Enola, Pa./Commonwealth Charter Academy) sent her No. 2 singles match to a deciding third set by winning the second frame 6-4, but fell by the same count during the final set.

Samma Zahran (Brookhaven, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) won six points at No. 1 singles, while Elizabeth Keeper (Bear, Del./Appoquinimink) earned three points during her No. 4 singles bout.

Brandywine will be back on its home courts Sunday for a 12:00 PM match with Rutgers-Camden.
