Second-Half Surge Propels Berkeley Past Lions

MEDIA, Pennsylvania -- Berkeley College (N.Y.) limited Penn State Brandywine to 15 second-half points, earning a 72-49 non-conference women's basketball victory on Sunday afternoon at the Brandywine Athletic Center.

Berkeley (4-0), which led 41-34 at the half, outscored the Lions 31-15 during the final 20 minutes, forcing 16 turnovers, while holding Brandywine to 25 percent shooting.

The Knights established a 25-11 lead at the midway point of the first half, but Brandywine stormed back with a 12-1 run spanning just under two minutes. Cashae Hinton (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) jumpstarted the surge with a basket at the 10:06 mark. After a Hinton steal, Jessy Gledhill (Secane, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) sank a jumper and Lauren Munro (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) collected a steal and layup. Six-straight points from Olivia Encarnacion (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) brought the Lions within three.

Berkeley pushed its lead back to 12 before five consecutive points from Hinton and Encarnacion shaved the Lions' deficit to seven at the half.

Milan Germany took over for Berkeley in the second half, scoring 14 of her game-high 30 points, while grabbing nine rebounds. She scored 10 of the Knights' first 12 points during the stanza as the lead swelled to 14.

Munro sank a layup at the 16:12 mark, but Brandywine would go ice cold from the field, with scoring droughts of 5:51 and 6:05 during the half.

Berkeley took advantage as Patricia Patterson's jumper with 12:17 to play gave the Knights a 20-point edge. The Knights would lead by at least that margin the rest of the way.

Encarnacion, playing in her first game of the season, led three Lions in double figures with 12 points, while Hinton tallied 11 points and five steals and Munro added 10 points. Gledhill pulled down a team-best six rebounds.

Brandywine forced 29 turnovers, but allowed the Knights to shoot 47 percent and score 38 points in the paint. The Lions connected on nearly 33 percent (20-61) of their field goal attempts.

Germany pulled down 15 boards in addition to her 30-point performance, while Lydia Casagrande added a 17-point, 10-rebound double-double.

Brandywine (2-3) visits Penn State Mont Alto Saturday at 1:00 pm.
