Brandywine Falls Short Against Rosemont

MEDIA, Pennsylvania – Liz Coyne scored 28 points and grabbed 17 rebounds as Rosemont opened up a double-figure halftime lead and held off a late Penn State Brandywine charge for an 80-70 non-conference women's basketball victory on Saturday afternoon.

The Lions jumped out to a 7-0 lead after four minutes as Olivia Encarnacion (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) drained a three-pointer and Lauren Munro (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) capped the run with a layup.

Rosemont rallied behind Coyne, who scored 16 first-half points. Coyne sank a pair of free throws to put Rosemont on the board at the 15:35 mark and gave the Ravens their first lead with a three-point play two minutes later.

Spurred by four points from Dominique Sellers, Rosemont used an 8-0 surge to grab a 22-14 edge. The Ravens extended their lead to 15 by scoring eight-straight points again during a three-minute span.

Rosemont led by as many as 17 points before Melanie Kempf's (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) layup brought Brandywine with 15 at the half.

Sellers' triple pushed the Ravens' advantage to 19 early in the second half, but Brandywine began to slowly chip away.

Encarnacion sank four-straight free throws and drained a jumper as the Lions pulled to within 12 by using an 8-1 spurt. Brandywine sliced the deficit to 11 on three occasions before Encarnacion added two more shots from the charity stripe to make the score 70-61.

MacArthur's triple with 4:39 to play brought the deficit to seven, but Rosemont answered with five-straight points and its lead would not dip below 10 the rest of the way.

MacArthur netted a team-high 18 points, while Encarnacion added 17 points and eight rebounds. Cashae Hinton (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) tallied 10 points and nine rebounds and Munro chipped in 10 points and seven boards.

Brandywine connected on 37 percent of its shots from the floor, but was outrebounded 65-43. Rosemont shot 35 percent from the field.

Sellers registered 18 points, while Leilani Naone-Carter produced a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds for the Ravens.

Brandywine (9-5, 4-0 PSUAC) looks to bounce back Sunday afternoon against PSUAC rival Penn State Fayette at 1:00 pm.
