Brandywine Walks Off Second-Straight World Series Victory

DUBOIS, Pa. – For the second consecutive day, top-seeded Penn State Brandywine walked off a 5-4 victory at the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Softball World Series, this time defeating No. 4 Penn State New Kensington Tuesday afternoon, to remain in the winners' bracket of the double-elimination tournament.

Tied 4-4 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, Emily Reagan (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) slashed a leadoff single to get the Lions' rally started. Kaylee Mushinski's (Allentown, N.J./Allentown) bunt single advanced Reagan to second before Payton Landis (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) lined the second pitch she saw to center field, plating Reagan with the game-winning score.

Mushinski produced three of Brandywine's nine hits, while Landis and Isabella Hurta (Colts Neck, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) both had two and Reagan crossed home twice.

The Lions jumped on New Kensington with four first-inning runs just four batters into the contest. Lexi Bussenger (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) extended her hitting streak to 45-straight games with a base hit before stealing second and scoring via error. After Reagan reached thanks to another New Kensington miscue, Mushinski laced her USCAA-leading 10th home run of the season over the left field fence. Landis followed with a solo shot, her fourth of the year.

New Kensington chipped away at the Lions' lead scoring single runs during the second and third innings. The No. 4 seed then knotted the score by recording back-to-back run-scoring hits in the sixth inning.

Crystal Cassario (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) retired New Kensington in order during the top of the seventh inning to keep the score tied at 4-all. Cassario improved to 14-4 on the spring after striking out one and allowing two runs in 2.2 frames. April Lewandowski (Atco, N.J./Hammonton) worked the first 4.1 innings, fanning two, while yielding two runs on 10 hits.

Brandywine (36-8) will face either Penn State Mont Alto or Penn State Schuylkill in a winners' bracket game Wednesday at 2:00 PM.
