Brandywine Women’s Soccer Victorious In Inaugural Game

MEDIA, Pennsylvania -- Playing for the first time as a varsity program, the Penn State Brandywine women's soccer team opened its season in style by routing Penn State Mont Alto 5-2 on the Lions' home field Wednesday afternoon.

Brandywine received two goals each from Olivia Encarnacion (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) and Arianna Segich (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City), while goalkeeper Alyssa Abbonizio (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) made four stops in net.

Encarnacion, who also added an assist for a five-point day, netted the first goal in program history just 3:49 into the first half after receiving a feed from Nicole Doyle (West Chester, Pa./Downingtown West). Nineteen minutes later, Iannello made the score 2-0 when she beat Mont Alto keeper Kennedy Guerin on a penalty kick.

After Mont Alto scored to cut Brandywine's lead in half, Segich took a pass from Cashae Hinton (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) and found the back of the net to push the Brandywine lead back to two at halftime.

Segich added her second goal of the contest 10 minutes into the second half and Encarnacion capped the scoring in the 59th minute.

Brandywine outshot Mont Alto 28-11 and attempted six of the game's eight corner kicks.

The Lions are back in action on Saturday, September 19 at home against Penn State Beaver at 3:00 pm.
