Iannello’s Late Goal Lifts Brandywine Past Schuylkill

MEDIA, Pennsylvania -- Penn State Brandywine dealt Penn State Schuylkill its first PSUAC women's soccer loss of the season as Ami Iannello (Media, Pa./Strath Haven) delivered the game's lone goal during the 85th minute to give Brandywine a 1-0 victory Wednesday afternoon.

Iannello ripped a free kick from right of the box following a Schuylkill (3-2, 3-1 PSUAC) handball and found the top left corner of the net to break the scoreless tie at the 84:42 mark.

The score by Iannello, her second of the season, was the last of numerous scoring opportunities for the Lions. Brandywine, which dominated possession for the majority of the contest, outshot Schuylkill 25-5 and registered 16 of the game's 17 shots during the final 45 minutes. The Lions rang shots off the cross bar on four occasions, while Schuylkill goalkeeper Megan Boyer stood tall, making 13 saves.

Brandywine net minder Alyssa Abbonizio (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) posted the first shutout in program history, stopping all three shots she faced, including a blast off a free kick from just outside the box early in the second half. Schuylkill's five total shots are the fewest surrendered by the Brandywine defense in three games this fall.

Iannello and Mary Mitcheli (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) both tallied four shots, while Olivia Encarnacion (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) paced the team with six.

The Lions (2-1, 2-1 PSUAC) face Penn State Greater Allegheny on Saturday during the finale of their four-game homestand.
