Mitcheli Delivers Overtime Winner At Schuylkill

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN, Pennsylvania -- Junior Mary Mitcheli (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) deposited the game-winning goal in overtime to send the Penn State Brandywine women's soccer team home with a 2-1 victory at Penn State Schuylkill on Wednesday afternoon.

Mitcheli's goal, scored four minutes into the extra session, came from just outside the box and was the first-ever overtime goal for the first-year program.

With the victory, Brandywine improved to 4-1 in conference play (4-2 overall) and moved the Lions one step closer to securing a spot in the PSUAC Championship game (Nov. 1 at University Park). Brandywine, which completed a season sweep of Schuylkill, holds a two-game lead in the loss column over Schuylkill and Greater Allegheny with three league matches remaining.

The game-winning tally came just nine minutes after Brandywine had knotted the score at 1-1. Ami Iannello (Media, Pa./Strath Haven) sped past the Schuylkill defense and sent a feed to Olivia Encarnacion (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro), who registered her team-best sixth goal of the fall with only five minutes to play in regulation.

All three goals Brandywine netted during its pair of victories over Schuylkill this season came after the 84-minute mark as Iannello scored the lone goal at 84:42 in Brandywine's 1-0 home win on Sept. 23.

Schuylkill had been clinging to a 1-0 edge for nearly 30 minutes as Kyra Bulino put Schuylkill on the board at the 59:00 mark before Encarnacion tied the score.

Brandywine outshot Schuylkill 24-7, recording 15 of its shot attempts during the opening 45 minutes. Lions' goalie Alyssa Abbonizio (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) picked up her fourth win of the season after blocking three shots, while Schuylkill net minder Megan Boyer made 10 saves in a losing cause.

Brandywine continues a six-game road trip at Penn State Mont Alto on Saturday (1:00 pm).
