Brandywine Drops Sunday Doubleheader To Fisher

ASTON, Pa. – Penn State Brandywine dropped the final two games of a four-game weekend series to Fisher College (Mass.) on Sunday afternoon, falling 6-2 in game one before the Falcons bested the Lions 4-3 in nine innings during game two.

In the nightcap, Brandywine surrendered a pair of first-inning runs, but rallied to tie the score at 2-2 in the fourth inning when Brian Reynolds (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) scored on a wild pitch and on the very next pitch, John Gorgone (Ridley, Pa./Ridley) crossed home on a passed ball.

One inning later, the Lions took the lead as Tommy Crumlish (Upper Darby, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) worked a two-out walk, moved to second on Matt Masi's (West Chester, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) base hit and then scored on Reynolds' single down the left field line.

Fisher immediately answered with a sixth-inning run, helping send the game to extra innings.

Brandywine reliever Stephen James (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garney Valley) worked out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the eighth inning; however, Fisher scored the game-winning run during the ninth inning on Sam Schroeder's bloop single down the right field line.

James suffered the loss for Brandywine. He allowed one run, while striking out four in two innings in relief of Kevin Sessa (Broomall, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara). Sessa went the first seven innings as he fanned three and allowed three earned runs on five hits.

Reynolds and Anthony Polanco (Long Island, N.Y./West Babylon) each collected two of Brandywine's seven hits.

During game one, Fisher ran out to a 5-0 lead in the fourth inning before the Lions pushed their first run across on Joey Buoni's (Chester Heights, Pa./Salesianum) bases-loaded walk. Brandywine drew one run closer in the fifth when Masi scored T.J. Wiest (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) with a sacrifice fly, but Fisher added an insurance run in the seventh inning to account for the final margin.

Kelvin Guzman and Matthew Trotta combined on a no-hitter for Fisher. Guzman went the first six innings, while Trotta closed out the seventh frame.

Tyler Michaels (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) took the loss for the Lions after allowing five runs (three earned) in four innings. John Grader (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) struck out five in three innings of scoreless relief.

Brandywine heads south for its annual Spring Break trip to Vero Beach, Fla., beginning with two games on Saturday. The Lions will face Trinity International and Miami-Hamilton to open the week-long trip.
