Brandywine Pulls Away From York For 9-2 Victory
YORK, Pa. – Penn State Brandywine and Penn State York were tied 2-2 through five innings, but Penn State Brandywine scored the final seven runs of the game to run away with a 9-2 Penn State University Athletic Conference baseball victory on Wednesday evening.
Brandywine's offense produced a season-high 17 hits led by John Gorgone (Ridley, Pa./Ridley) and Kevin Roche (Malvern, Pa./Chaminade College Prep (Calif.)), who each tallied three knocks.
Matt Masi (West Chester, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) doubled twice, while Tommy Crumlish (Upper Darby, Pa./Monsignor Bonner), Brian Reynolds (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) and Will Scott-Norris (Wilmington, Del./Mt. Pleasant) also recorded multi-hit performances.
York led 1-0 through two innings, but a bases-loaded double from Masi plated Gorgone and Brett Sheeran (Springfield, Pa./Springfield), giving Brandywine a one-run edge in the third.
After York knotted the score 2-2, Crumlish gave the Lions the lead for good in the sixth when his sacrifice fly allowed Roche to score. Roche and Scott-Norris added insurance runs with seventh-inning RBI singles and the Lions broke the game open with four additional runs one inning later.
Masi knocked in three runs, while Roche drove in a pair and both crossed home twice. Gorgone also scored two runs and Crumlish recorded two of Brandywine's four stolen bases.
Joe Samohod (Morton, Pa./Ridley) went the first 7.0 innings on the mound, evening his record at 2-2 this spring. He struck out two, while allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits. Nate Forwood (Wilmington, Del./Mt. Pleasant) pitched two scoreless innings in relief, striking out one.
Brandywine (5-14, 3-1 PSUAC) opens a weekend series with Penn State Wilkes Barre on Friday at Maple Zone. First pitch is slated for 6:00 pm.
