Long Balls, Pitching Lead Brandywine To Victories

ASTON, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine hit its first five home runs of the season and its pitching staff fired two more shutouts as the Lions picked up a softball sweep of Penn State Schuylkill by scores of 15-0 and 7-0 on Friday afternoon.

Game One: Penn State Brandywine 15, Penn State Schuylkill 0

Meghan Ferry (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester City) launched the first two home runs of her career and drove in five runs to lead the offensive onslaught in game one. Ferry's two-home run game was the fourth in Brandywine history and first since April 27, 2018 when Arianna Segich went deep twice in a PSUAC Tournament victory over Penn State Hazleton.

Rebecca Sorrentino (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby) hit a two-run shot in the first inning to help her own cause, the first of her two hits in the opener. Sorrentino fired 3.0 scoreless innings in the circle for her second shutout in three days and fourth victory of the season. She struck out three and allowed two hits.

Payton Landis (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) recorded the first of her two doubles to drive in Brandywine's first run during the opening inning before Sorrentino sent the first pitch she saw over the right field fence for a 3-0 Brandywine lead.

Ferry hit a two-run homer in the second inning, part of a four-run inning. Haley Grossi (Monmouth Junction, N.J./South Brunswick) added a run-scoring single, one of her three hits in game one.

The Lions ended the game early by plating eight more runs in the third.

Ferry hammered a three-run home run to left field before Landis and Sorrentino collected consecutive run-scoring doubles. Grossi tripled in Sorrentino, while Sarah Moore (New Holland, Pa./Pequea Valley) added two more runs with a double.

Brandywine collected 13 hits and saw five players record multi-hit efforts, while five players also crossed home at least twice.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 7, Penn State Schuylkill 0

Brandywine's offense continued to click in the nightcap as Ferry and Landis added to the long balls with solo home runs in the sixth inning.

Rebecca Halford (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) notched her third shutout of the week with 7.0 scoreless innings as she improved to 4-3. Halford fanned two and yielded four hits.

Sorrentino got the scoring started with a first-inning RBI single before the Lions added three more runs in the third. Grossi sent a triple to the right-center field fence to score a pair and then crossed home on Lianna DeDios' (Elmwood Park, N.J./Memorial) base hit.

Brandywine registered eight more hits in game two, paced by Moore's pair of knocks.

Brandywine (8-4, 8-4 PSUAC) and Schuylkill close out the six-game series Saturday afternoon at Schuylkill beginning at noon.
