Brandywine Places Four On USCAA Softball All-American Teams

DUBOIS, Pa. – A quartet of Penn State Brandywine softball players were lauded with all-American selections from the United States Collegiate Athletic Association on Sunday night as sophomore Rebecca Sorrentino (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby) was named to the first team, classmate Destiny Brophy (Bristol, Pa./Bristol) received second team laurels and seniors Rachel Cherubini (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) and Haley Grossi (Monmouth Junction, N.J./South Brunswick) landed honorable mention awards. 

Sorrentino was one of the best two-way players in the USCAA after posting a 9-2 record in the circle and a .397 batting average at the plate.  

In 12 starts, Sorrentino fired 10 complete games, including four shutouts. She finished fifth among USCAA pitchers with a 2.47 earned run average after limiting opponents to 26 earned runs in 73.2 innings. Sorrentino also struck out 50 hitters, with a season-best eight coming in a shutout against Penn State Scranton on April 20. 

At the plate, Sorrentino led Brandywine with 26 RBI in 26 games. She collected 29 hits in 73 at-bats, including 10 that went for extra bases. Sorrentino hit safely in 21 games and added 19 runs scored. 

Brophy was one-of-four Lions to start every game, playing all 27 contests at third base. She amassed 32 hits, a team-best, in 85 at-bats, hitting .376. Her 15-game hitting streak from April 13-24 tied for the third-longest streak in team history. 

Brophy finished second on the team with 25 RBI, while ranking third in runs scored with 25. She drove in four runs during each game of a doubleheader sweep against Penn State Scranton on April 19 and recorded her first-career home run, an inside-the-parker, during the first round of the PSUAC Tournament in early May. 

Cherubini received her second all-American award after earning a first team selection as a freshman.  

She batted .368 after totaling 28 hits in 25 games. Cherubini ranked second on the team and seventh in the USCAA with 34 runs scored, while adding nine stolen bases. During the postseason, Cherubini hit .389 with a five-RBI game against Penn State New Kensington and delivered a walk-off base hit against Penn State DuBois on May 10.  

Cherubini completed her 112-game career ranking second in team history in hits (131) and runs scored (131), while standing third in RBI (99). 

Grossi capped her 104-game career with an all-American award after hitting .352 in 25 games this spring. She produced 25 hits, seven of which went for extra bases, and added 23 runs scored and 16 RBI. 

Grossi hit safely in eight of her final nine games and 18 times overall this season. She produced five multi-hit efforts, including three-hit performances in back-to-back games against Penn State Schuylkill on April 14-16.  

During her career, Grossi batted .352 with 89 hits, four home runs, 60 RBI and 82 runs scored. She earned all-conference accolades three times.  

Brandywine captured is sixth consecutive PSUAC Championship and completed its season with a record of 20-7.
