Brandywine’s Winning Streak Ends Against Central Penn

MEDIA, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine baseball team saw its program-record 15-game winning streak come to an end on Tuesday following a 9-7 loss to Central Penn.

The Lions held a 7-6 lead entering the top of the seventh inning, but Central Penn took advantage of three walks and a Brandywine error to score a trio of unearned runs. Brandywine put two runners in scoring position with one out during the ninth inning; however, the Lions push across another run.

Brandywine trailed 2-0 with two outs in the bottom of the second before a base hit from Max Tavarez (Woodbridge, N.J./Woodbridge) scored Evan Shade (Green Lane, Pa./Upper Perkiomen).

The Lions took the lead thanks to a four-run third inning as Tavarez, Jamey Massung (Phillipsburg, Pa./Phillipsburg-Osceola) and Ian Merrin (Upper Chichester, Pa./Chichester) all produced run-scoring singles.

The Knights answered with four runs of their own during the fourth inning, but Brandywine rallied during the bottom of the frame, scoring a pair of runs. Shade singled to score Owen Lawton (Glenmoore, Pa./Downingtown East) with the tying run and Jimmy Carey (Springfield, Pa./Bonner-Prendie) crossed home via Derek Wenskoski's (Roselle Park, N.J./Roselle Park) sacrifice fly to make the count 7-6.

Lawton, Merrin, Massung and Tavarez all tallied two hits for the Lions, who produced 13 overall. Tavarez drove in a pair of runs, while Carey and Shade both scored twice.

Jack Johnston (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) notched one strikeout during 2.0 scoreless innings and Campbell Smith (Cape Coral, Fla./Cape Coral) and Ty Coccia (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) each tossed a scoreless frame to highlight six Brandywine pitchers. Jacob Weeks (Middletown, Del./Middletown) suffered the loss after allowing three unearned runs during the seventh inning.

Brandywine (21-9, 14-2 PSUAC) opens its final conference series of the season Thursday against Penn State York at 12:00 PM.
