Errors Costly For Lions In Setback

SCRANTON, Pa. -- Three errors were too much to overcome for the Penn State Brandywine baseball team Tuesday afternoon at Marywood as the Lions dropped an 8-5 decision to the Pacers.

Brandywine outhit Marywood 10-5, but the trio of miscues led to four unearned runs crossing home for the Pacers. Ryan Brown (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem), Mike DeGirolamo (Frederick, Md./Frederick), Ryan Snyder (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) and Shawn Webb (Drexel Hill, Pa./Bonner-Prendie) all tallied two-hit days to lead the Lions offensively.

The Lions were on the board first as Cam Baughman (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) slugged a two-run home run to open the scoring in the first inning.

Marywood used a two-run shot of its own to tie the score in the third before taking the lead with a single run in the fourth. The Pacers added a pair of markers in the fifth to build a 5-2 edge.

Brandywine rallied in the sixth inning as Brown singled with one out and scored on Owen Lawton's (Glenmoore, Pa./Downingtown East) groundout. Webb followed with a triple and later scored via wild pitch to bring the Lions within one. The Lions tied the score during their next at-bat as Sam Benvignati (Aston, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) worked a two-out walk and came around to score thanks to a double from DeGirolamo.

Marywood took the lead for good by plating three runs during the bottom of the seventh. A Brandywine error allowed the go-ahead run to cross home and a pair of bases-loaded walks provided insurance runs for the Pacers.

Eight pitchers toed the rubber for the Lions on the day. Kaleb Merendino (Glen Mills, Pa./Penncrest) retired the side in order during the second inning, while Ty Coccia (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) held the Pacers without a hit in 1.0 inning of work and Michael Govan (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) struck out a pair in 1.1 frames on the mound.

Brandywine (5-6) opens conference play with a home doubleheader Friday against Penn State Schuylkill.
