Brandywine Opens Conference Play With Doubleheader Split; Baughman Reaches 100 Hits

ASTON, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine and Penn State Schuylkill got Penn State University Athletic Conference baseball action started Friday afternoon by splitting a doubleheader at Maple Zone. Brandywine claimed the opener 5-1, highlighted by the 100th career hit by Cam Baughman (Oxford, Pa./Oxford), and Schuylkill bounced back to win the nightcap 10-4.

Game One: Penn State Brandywine 5, Penn State Schuylkill 1

Baughman entered the game with 99 hits in his career and wasted no time in becoming the 11th player in program history with 100 knocks as he laced a first-inning single to right field on the first pitch he saw. He finished the game 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI at the plate.

The game was scoreless until the third inning when the Lions struck for a trio of runs. Evan Abegg (Commerce City, Colo./Prairie View) started the scoring by lifting a sacrifice fly that scored Shawn Webb (Drexel Hill, Pa./Bonner-Prendie). Baughman followed with an RBI single and three batters later, Ryan Brown (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) worked a bases-loaded walk to force in a run.

Brandywine answered Schuylkill's fourth inning marker with a run in the fifth as Baughman led off with a triple and later crossed home. Sndyer's sacrifice fly that plated Toby Skeans (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) provided another insurance tally in the sixth.

Connor Thompson (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) went the distance on the mound to up his record to 4-1. He limited Schuylkill to just one run on three hits, while striking out two.

Game Two: Penn State Schuylkill 10, Penn State Brandywine 4

Brandywine held a four-run lead through two innings, but Schuylkill scored the game's final 10 runs to force a split of the doubleheader.

Schuylkill plated single runs during the third and fourth innings to trim the Lions' lead in half before striking for eight runs in the fifth. The visitors needed only three hits during the fifth inning to plate the eight runs as Brandywine pitching issued eight walks.

Abegg walked and later scored via Mike DeGirolamo's (Frederick, Md./Frederick) sacrifice fly to put Brandywine on top 1-0 through one inning.

The Lions recorded four-straight hits to push three more runs across in the second. Skeans singled with two outs and moved to third on Webb's double. Snyder followed with a two-run single and, after stealing second, scored on a double from Abegg.

The Lions were limited to just one hit the rest of the way as Schuylkill rallied for the victory.

Brandywine (6-7, 1-1 PSUAC) and Schuylkill will close out the four-game weekend series Sunday at Blue Mountain High School beginning at 1:00 PM.
