Clarks Summit Downs Brandywine 7-3

ASTON, Pa. -- Clarks Summit dealt the Penn State Brandywine baseball team a 7-3 defeat at Maple Zone on Monday night.

After yielding a first inning run, Brandywine struck for a pair of scores during the bottom of the frame. Evan Abegg (Commerce City, Colo./Prairie View) led off with a single and after a fielder's choice put Mike DeGirolamo (Frederick, Md./Frederick) on first base, he scored following Cam Baughman's (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) triple. Baughman crossed home with the second run when Shawn Webb (Drexel Hill, Pa./Bonner-Prendie) sent a sacrifice fly to right field.

The Defenders tied the game with a solo home run in the fourth inning and then took the lead for good by plating four fifth inning markers.

Brandywine's final score came during the bottom of the ninth when Sam Benvignati (Aston, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) lifted a sacrifice fly, scoring Ryan Brown (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem).

Baughman recorded a pair of extra-base hits and joined Brown with a two-hit night. The Lions outhit the Defenders 8-7, but struck out 10 times.

Six pitchers saw action on the mound for Brandywine. Abel Bartosek (Fort Worth, Texas/Chisholm Trail) and Ty Coccia (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) both tossed a scoreless frame. Josh Hess (Panama City, Fla./Arnold) made his collegiate debut, fanning three and allowing one run over three innings, while Jack Johnston (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) also went three innings, striking out a pair.

Brandywine (1-1) begins play at the RussMatt Invitational in Davenport, Fla., on Saturday against Alfred University at 4:15 PM.
