Reynolds Records 100th Hit; Brandywine Falls Short Against Curry

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Brian Reynolds (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) tallied the 100th hit of his career during game two of Penn State Brandywine's Monday morning doubleheader against Curry College. The Lions scored the final seven runs of game one, but came up short, falling 9-8, before the Colonels completed the sweep with a 7-0 victory in game two.

Game One: Curry 9, Penn State Brandywine 8

Curry owned a 9-1 lead heading to the bottom of the sixth inning, but Brandywine struck for four runs to narrow the gap to 9-5. The Lions loaded the bases with no outs as Nick Kutufaris (Ridley, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) and Tom Donahue (Ridley, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) both singled and Reynolds reached via a Colonel error. Joe Hurley (Downingtown, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) delivered a two-run single to start the rally, while Hayden Altimari (Dix Hills, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and Cam Baughman (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) both registered run-scoring groundouts.

One inning later, Reynolds sent a two-out double down the left field line to plate Kutufaris. Hurley followed with a two-run double to get Brandywine within one; however, the Lions' rally came up short as Philip Ledwith recorded a strikeout to halt the comeback bid.

Hurley finished 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBI, while Donahue scored three runs and Kutufaris and Reynolds crossed home twice.

Ben Mutz (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) was charged with the loss after allowing six earned runs 3.2 innings, while striking out four batters. Lex Finkin (Hollywood, Fla./South Broward) tossed 1.2 frames of scoreless relief, fanning one.

Game Two: Curry 7, Penn State Brandywine 0

Reynolds' 100th career hit came in the sixth inning, a double off the left field wall as he missed a home run by just a few feet. Reynolds leads the team with 11 hits and has reached base safely in eight-of-nine games this spring.

Overall, the Lions were limited to four hits. In addition to Reynolds' double, Sean Donahue (Ridley, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) recorded a double and both Tom Donahue and Jack Hedger (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) singled.

Michael Paytas (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) tossed 5.1 innings, striking out two, while allowing four earned runs for Brandywine. Nick Kavrakis twirled a complete-game shutout and fanned eight to lead the Colonels.

Curry scored single runs in the first and fourth innings before blowing the game open with a five-run sixth inning.

Brandywine closes out its Spring Break trip Wednesday with a doubleheader against Gordon College at 2:45 PM.
