Fifteen Brandywine Student-Athletes Earn USCAA Spring National Academic Recognition

MEDIA, Pa. – Fifteen of Penn State Brandywine's spring student-athletes were honored with academic awards from the United States Collegiate Athletic Association as they were selected to the USCAA National Academic Team this week.

The USCAA All-Academic Team is awarded to student-athletes who have accumulated a minimum GPA of 3.50 entering the spring semester and reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution.

Brandywine baseball had five student-athletes earn recognition. Seniors Sean Donahue (Ridley, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) and Tom Donahue (Ridley, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) both earned their second awards, while Ben Mutz (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven), Joe Hurley (Downingtown, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) and Nick Kutufaris (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) were all first-time awardees.

Four members of the Brandywine softball team claimed laurels as Rachel Cherubini (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) and Haley Grossi (Monmouth Junction, N.J./South Brunswick) both landed their second national academic selections and Cara Fabiano (Bristol, Pa./Bristol) and Fiona Warren (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) were each selected for the first time.

Four members of the track and field squads also received honors. Track and field was represented by sophomores Brian Abel (Amesbury, Mass./Amesbury), Ryan Cassidy (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) and Catharine Mooney (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley), each of whom also received national academic selections following cross country season last fall, and Caleb Madison (Brookhaven, Pa./The Christian Academy). Madison, a junior, earned his second spring award in as many years.

Stevie DiSipio (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) and Victor Ficarra (Glenmoore, Pa./Downingtown STEM Academy) represented the tennis team on the USCAA National Academic Teams. Both received their second selection from the USCAA.

Brandywine led all Penn State University Athletic Conference campuses with its 15 spring honorees. Penn State DuBois and Penn State Schuylkill both had 12 student-athletes honored.

Overall during the 2019-20 academic year, 27 Brandywine student-athletes received USCAA National Academic Team laurels, a new department-high total. The previous high mark was 17 during the 2018-19 and 2017-18 academic years.
